First of all, thanks to everyone who commented, donated, retweeted, and sent good thoughts to my friends Henry, Amy, and David. The outpouring of help and support they have received has been amazing, and has renewed my belief in the inherent goodness of the world. Just to catch you up on Henry's prognosis and recovery:
After our lovely local vets did all they could, it was decided that Henry would travel two hours to Texas A&M University, which houses one of the premier veterinary schools in the nation. There, it was discovered that Henry was suffering from a bulging disc in his spine, which had paralyzed his hind legs and made him unable to use his bladder. After emergency surgery, the doctors said Henry's spine was looking good and that the rest was up to him.
Since then, Henry has shown some great signs of recovery and improvement! Amy's last update informed us that he has been alert, responsive, friendly, is experiencing pain in his rear legs (a very good sign!), and has regained some mobility. He's been moved out of the ICU and into the neurological ward, and he'll spent the next two weeks in the capable hands of the vets at A&M.
The road to full recovery is long (and expensive) but you can follow along at the Help Henry Facebook page. Not only does it document the strength and spirit of this amazing animal, but watching as his community rallies behind him is guaranteed to warm your heart.
Again, thanks for your comments and support. I know that Amy and David have been blown away by the kindness shown to them and their sweet pup, and that they are grateful beyond words. As am I. <3
