Pooch Plunge 2012

We attended one of our favorite annual events last night. I'll give you three guesses as to what that event was.

Guess #3:

If you guessed the Pooch Plunge, you're right! We first learned about the Pooch Plunge last year, and had a great time with the boys. Basically, the city of Wilmington closes the public pool after Labor Day, but keep it open for one extra week before draining the water, with one catch - only dogs are allowed to swim. It costs five bucks per pup, and all the money goes to the local shelter. It's pretty amazing to see a bunch of dogs going crazy in the water, barking, jumping, splashing, and swimming after tennis balls. It might even be the best thing ever.

Seamus is a true blue water dog and has always loved swimming - as soon as we walked into the pool he made a beeline for the water and got started on making slow circles in the water immediately. Calvin required some cajoling and spent the first ten minutes standing on the edge, barking at the water. Eventually he found the steps and that seemed to win him over. He kept bringing us tennis balls to throw into the water for him - I think focusing on the chase helped him forget his fear.

We had a rookie Plunger with us today - Costello, the sweetest/naughiest Goldendoodle puppy you'll ever meet in your life, who lives with our friends Mel and Carson. He also had a hard time with the concept of the Pooch Plunge, but with Nathan's help (see above) he eventually figured it out and had a great time. Almost too great a time, in fact - at one point, after a marathon swimming session, we noticed him slowly sinking from exhaustion. Erica reached over the edge of the pool and yanked him to shore, and then Mel put him on the leash for some forced rest time. This rookie still has a lot to learn.

If you live in Wilmington, the Pooch Plunge is still going on - every night this week from 4pm to 8pm, and Saturday from 10am to 2pm. We'll probably go again, considering we'll have to wait a whole year for Pooch Plunge Oh'thirteen, and the money goes to such a good cause. Plus the boys just love it, as you can see from the excessive amount of photos I included in this post.

As Carson said last night: "Pooch Plunge 4 Life!" As Seamus and Calvin said, "Damn straight! Now gimme a treat!"
