2013 Plan of Attack

I like to make a big deal out of setting goals for the New Year. The last two years, I've outlined a detailed Plan of Attack, filled with resolutions, ambitions, and intentions. Of those goals, I have achieved some of them, while others shifted over the months, and still others were abandoned or forgotten. Occasionally - and this is a really big confession, so hold on to your pants - I suspect that I might crave the process of making resolutions more than the actual accomplishment. 

I know. I know. 

This year, I'm going to take a different approach. One year. One goal. This, of course, doesn't mean that I'm going to abandon all my other good habits and forgo unrelated ambitions for the next twelve months. I'll still exercise regularly and eat good-for-me things. I'll strive to read more books and practice more yoga. I'll make time for friends and get better at writing thank you notes. I won't let clean laundry pile up on the guest bed, I'll stay on top of my school work, I'll drink less wine (but not less often). 

But those aren't goals worthy of a New Year's Resolution. Those are just things that I should be doing every day because I am a grown up human, and being responsible, kind, and able to handle every day tasks should be a given. 

This year, my New Year's Resolution will not be wasted on mundane things. This year, I'm doing it right.  One year. One goal. If you've been reading for any length of time, I'm sure this goal won't be very shocking. It's the only goal that makes sense right now, the only goal worth pursuing. 

By the end of 2013, I will write a complete draft of my first novel. 

Better get to work.
